Australian Whisky Takes A Leap Forward

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society proudly announces its first ever Australian whisky!

In a seismic shift for Australian whisky and the appreciation of local spirit, we’d like to proudly welcome Society bottling code 147 to the family.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society in August will be releasing the very first single cask Australian whisky ever to pass the scrupulous noses of our expert tasting panel.

Bottled exclusively for members of the Society, Cask 147.1 Jacaranda Jam presents a seismic shift in how Australian whisky is presented to the world, and a strong collaboration with the distillery itself in getting here. This milestone represents our dedication to growing the local chapter of the world’s leading whisky club and our commitment to the growing Australian whisky industry. 147.1 Jacaranda Jam is a hand-selected 1st fill Ex-Apera quarter cask yielding only 130 bottles worldwide and is in the Society’s Juicy Oak & Vanilla flavour profile. Bottled as a single cask and at natural cask strength of 63.1% ABV, it will be available to members on Friday 6th August at midday, and only through smws.com.au. Tasting notes of honeyed jam, Coco Pops & milk, waxy flowers and lively earthy notes.

Included in our August Outturn is our in-depth 3-part historical recount of Australian whisky and taking a look at the journey that led us to distillery code 147. A historical journey of how we got here and where we’re going. Renowned whisky writer Luke McCarthy from OzWhiskyReview takes us on a journey of the early years, then our very own Cellarmaster and NSW State Manager, Andrew Derbidge, takes us on a journey through the growing pains into the 90’s and onward, then our Ambassador Matt Bailey takes us on a ride through the most recent history that led us to here.

Distillery 147 is a Sydney-based distillery that excels in spirit innovation and given the Society’s relationship with them as an esteemed Partner Bar over the last 5 years, made perfect sense to work with them for the bottling of code 147. This is an important release in the context of the Society, but equally so in the context of Australian whisky. We’ve taken this opportunity to do things differently. To be the game-changers yet again. To hand-select and bottle locally. This is a special cask for members of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Australia. Just six bottles will be shipped to The Vaults in the UK for archival purposes, but the rest is being made available for members of the SMWS. Early reviews of 147.1 by renowned wine & spirits critic Max Allen among others have been hugely complimentary of the cask calling it “exuberant, hedonistic whisky“.

Cask 147.1 Jacaranda Jam will be made available on our Friday Outturn release date, 6 August, at midday AEST. Limit to one bottle per member and only available to members of the world’s leading whisky club, the SMWS. If you’re interested in having a chance of owning and enjoying this piece of local distilling milestone, the first Australian whisky to ever pass the expert tasting panel, then make sure you’re logged in, and your card details are up to date. If you’re not currently a member of the SMWS, join here and use the code JACARANDA for $30 off any membership type.
