Celebrate the love of whisky with February Outturn — a stunning collection of sensational and delicious single cask, cask strength whisky available now to all members of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (including our incredible 18-year-old “heresy” Malt of the Month — Full bloom).

Whether you haven’t quite had the chance to peruse February Outturn, or just aren’t sure what to grab, do not fret because our team has curated our top SMWS cask picks for the month to help make the decision easier.

1. Batch 16 Full bloom

Our very exciting 18yo single malt “heresy” release — a beautiful collaboration of Scottish and Aussie flavours with extra maturation in Australian Muscat barriques from a prominent Australian winery and cask supplier. Notes of exotic tobacco pouch, melon, mango, lychee and floral rosewater. This is a very exciting release and one that has involved quite a lot of legwork behind the scenes — a truly fantastic malt that can make you appreciate the effort and planning that goes into cask maturation.

2. Cask 72.107 A cheerful soul

A brilliant combination of creamy and zesty flavours with vanilla bean, lemon sherbet sweets, runny honey and buttermilk. The brandy snaps and ginger biscuits aren’t afraid to show their aromas on the initial neat nose. A healthy 10 years in a 1st fill bourbon barrel — there’s plenty of flavour to go around with this cask. This is definitely Branch Director Matt Bailey’s pick as a February Outturn “sleeper” so don’t miss out on this brilliant release from underdog distillery 72.

3. Cask 105.40 The sweet kiss of leather splinters

The name certainly paints a charming picture; an 8-year-old Juicy, Oak & Vanilla that saw a three-year extra maturation in a heavy char, medium toast 2nd fill hoggy — DELICIOUS! The first whiff may provide notes of heather honey, dried flowers, hibiscus tea, malt loaf and natural liquorice. On the palate: cod liver oil, waxes, black tea, miso paste, wintergreen and lemon cough drops — quite a thick and oily dram with rich spices.

4. Cask 112.99 Feels like a caress

A romantic and sensual dram with 15 years of maturation in an ex-bourbon hogshead and an extra three years in a 1st fill ex-Sauternes barrique. Walnut wine, late harvest orange muscat, hibiscus tea as well as a kiwi and lime flavoured cider on the palate. The perfect dram to enjoy over Valentine’s Day (or any day for that matter).

5. Cask 48.147 New balls please!

A fantastic expression from distillery 48 — 10 years in a 1st fill bourbon barrel and bottled at a healthy 60.6% ABV. “Nettle and blackcurrant leaf on the nose shifts to bubblegum and new tennis balls”, says the panel, with the neat palate giving spearmint gum, toffee bonbons, fly cemeteries, and a spicy warmth of ginger and white pepper on the finish.
