WHAT ARE THE TASTINGS ABOUT...

As a whisky enthusiast, no doubt your palate is attuned to the subtleties of many single malts... but... how well do you know the differences between a highland malt or an island malt, or perhaps a lowland malt?

Come along to our next tasting and test your skills on some of the latest exclusive single malts to arrive on our shores. Finger food, specifically chosen to accentuate and compliment the different flavours in the various whiskies will be served.

The evenings are designed not only to stimulate the palate but also to answer your questions and for general discussion. Come along, practise your nosing and tasting skills and learn more about this fine drop!

SMWS Australia Whisky Tour of Scotland 2009

We are delighted to announce that SMWS Australia's first Whisky Tour of Scotland planned for 2009 has filled up so quickly that we have arranged a second tour - bookings open now! Both are ten day tours (land package only) and the first one, led by Andrew Derbidge, Society Cellarmaster/Director and NSW Manager, commences on Tuesday 26th May 2009 until Thursday 4th June. The tour will start and finish in Edinburgh, the birthplace of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. The second group (June 4th - 13th), led by Chris Barnes, the Society's Marketing Director and VIC Manager, will commence with a lunch at The Vaults where the two groups will meet and members from the first tour can share their whisky tales over a delicious lunch and a fine dram!

As you would expect, there will be plenty of distillery visits, each one with its own distinguishing feature. A visit to a cooperage is also a must, to see how those very important vessels are made that contribute about 60% of the flavour to our inimitable single cask single malts. The tour will see us cross the country up, down and sideways with visits to Speyside, Islay and even Orkney - no prizes for guessing the distillery we’ll be visiting there.

Apart from all things whisky and wonderful dining, (Loch Fyne Oysters, anyone? - at Loch Fyne), beautiful Scottish scenery will be in plentiful supply. The only element of this tour not within our control will be - yes, you guessed - the weather. Late May/early June is typically a good time of year but let’s not tempt fate. We all know that any trip to Scotland requires packing clothing for up to four seasons a day!

Cousins Tours & Travel, a Specialist Travel company in Melbourne, is looking after the bookings for this event. Full details and costs are available online at http://www.cousinstt.com/cousins_tour.php?tour_id=113 To secure your seats, a deposit will be required payable to the agency. The size of group for this tour will be ten maximum.

So what are you waiting for - it's the tour of your whisky dreams!
