Introducing Mr Peter Johnston

Peter, an agricultural scientist, began drinking Scotch whisky in the swinging sixties, albeit initially with Coca Cola! Luckily his tastes for life’s finer things matured with age as he discovered deluxe blends and later in the early 1980’s single malts.

Over the last 20 years he has been on a personal journey through the various expressions of the malt available from open and closed distilleries. Naturally the Scottish distilleries are still producing his favourites, however he enjoys sampling old favourites and new ones from Ireland, Japan, Australia and the rest of the world!

Peter is an office bearer in the Queensland Malt Whisky Society. In this role he has the task of sourcing rare and unusual malts, procuring them and presenting them to the Society. He has become a detective of sorts and enjoys tracking down rare and unusual products from all around the world.

Peter is also a Foundation Member of the Malt Whisky Society of Australia, a Life Member of the Islay Whisky Club and is a Malt Whisky Judge. He joined the SMWS when it started in Australia in 2003. Peter has recently launched a small business (called “In High Spirits”) where he is a “Whisk(e)y Facilitator”.

In his numerous trips to Scotland Peter has so far visited 38 distilleries and hopes to get back there soon to continue in his quest to see them all. Peter has a huge whisky library and is active in web based whisky discussion lists.
