| WHAT ARE THE TASTINGS ABOUT... |
| As a whisky enthusiast, no doubt your palate is attuned to the subtleties of many single malts... but... how well do you know the differences between a highland malt or an island malt, or perhaps a lowland malt?
Come along to our next tasting and test your skills on some of the latest exclusive single malts to arrive on our shores. Finger food, specifically chosen to accentuate and compliment the different flavours in the various whiskies will be served.
The evenings are designed not only to stimulate the palate but also to answer your questions and for general discussion. Come along, practise your nosing and tasting skills and learn more about this fine drop!

LATEST NEWS ARTICLE: The Australian Malt Whisky Tasting Championship
The time has arrived! Bookings are now being taken for the Australian Malt Whisky Tasting Championships, 2008 – an event open to all keen whisky drinkers around the country.
The Australian Malt Whisky Tasting Championships was a blind-tasting competition that was held in Adelaide from 1989 to 2002, although it was in recess from 1997 until 2000. After six long years without a champion, the event is being resurrected by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society and will be the country’s premier national whisky event for this year.
Now under the banner of the SMWS, the Championship will be based on a similar format. Entry is open to all and sundry, although Society members will receive a discount on registration. At the time of registration, entrants will receive a list of commercially available whiskies from which the competition malts will be selected. On the day of the competition, entrants will receive a short-list of malts and have eight drams before them which they must subsequently correctly identify from the short list, (e.g. Whisky “A” = Glenmorangie 18yo). The person with the highest number of correct answers wins the title!
The 2008 Championship will be held in Sydney on Saturday June 21st. We are absolutely delighted to report that Guillaume at Bennelong, at the Sydney Opera House, will be the fitting location for the relaunch of this major event in the whisky calendar. The tasting championship will commence early evening and will be followed by a magnificent cocktail party and tasting with canapés matched to some delicious whiskies by none other than Franz Scheurer, food and whisky matching guru extraordinaire. Society members and guests are all invited to the après-tasting and the “Malt Whisky Tasting Champion 2008” will then be crowned!
We are happy to announce that Glenmorangie and Lark Distillery have come onboard as sponsors, to assist in making this a night and event to remember. The main prize, should you win this tasting challenge, is a quite exceptional whisky experience - and should tempt you into signing up and starting your “tasting homework”!
1ST PRIZE - “Tasmanian Whisky Experience” A 7-day trip for two to Tasmania including flights, accommodation and car hire. The main feature of this trip will be a four-day “Tasmanian Whisky Experience” courtesy of Bill Lark at Lark Distillery. You will be involved in all aspects of malt whisky production, from digging the peat at the Lark Distillery Brown Marsh Bog to brewing and distilling the whisky spirit. And there will be some other distillery tours and fine dining along the way.
2ND PRIZE - Bottle of Glenfarclas 1980 Cask 3164
3RD PRIZE - Four complimentary tickets to attend SMWS tasting events
An information flyer sheet and booking form are available on request. We advise that places at the event are strictly limited, and we encourage all interested tasters to register sooner rather than later to avoid disappointment!

MATCHING THE NUMBERS TO THE DISTILLERIES |
| A frequently asked question is "How do I match the numbers to the distilleries?"
Under the arrangement the Society has with distillers the Society undertakes not to put the distiller's name on the bottle, and not to publish a list which matches the numbers to the distilleries. However the Society map, together with the tasting notes, allow members to identify where the whisky comes from, without too much effort, and is a good way to learn a bit about Scotland.
A private whisky web site in Denmark (Whisky Portal), however, has published this list, and as the site contains useful whisky information for our members we have created a link to it off our own web site.
To find the site do the following:
Select "Links" (in the green area at the top of the page, second line, last word)
Under the heading "Whisky Sites" click on "Whisky Portal"
This brings up the Whisky portal disclaimer page. Click on the underlined words "Whisky portal"
On the left hand side of the page which then appears is a list. Click on "SMWS Codes" and the list of distilleries and codes will appear. If you need any further assistance, please contact the Society direct.
